Oops!

Well, it happened.  I got hurt yesterday after falling off of a step and twisting my foot.  I didn't think anything was broken, but it kept getting worse, so Don and I went to an emergency facility last evening to have it checked.  No one else was there, so we got right in.  After taking X-rays, the doctor came out and told me nothing was broken and that I just needed to stay off of it for a couple of days.  Hallelujah! The best thing about it, though, was the fact that it only cost me € 50 (less than $70) to get it checked out.  Maybe we should move to Latvia.

We went and did our laundry again yesterday (that's when I got hurt).  We still had two loads, but we thought that it might be cheaper since we actually did it ourselves, but it was still €19.  We had sent one load of laundry with our landlord last week, and, when we got it back, it only cost us €10, so we sent some more.  However, we noticed that some things were missing from this first batch -- two of Don's shirts, a skirt, and a pair of Capris.  I thought that they had probably been taken and that we wouldn't get them back.  We contacted our landlord, and she went and checked it out for us.  She brought back the second load we had sent with her (again, €10), but also brought back the missing items.  The laundry person felt that they needed to be dry cleaned, so we owed an additional €15 for getting those four items dry cleaned.  We paid €15 for getting two shirts, a skirt and a pair of Capris dry cleaned, when I would have just stuck them in with the wash. We can't seem to win for losing!   Oh, well, it's just money, right?  I'm just glad to get the missing items back.

I did get to visit a choir rehearsal on Monday evening, and it was great.  It was in a neighboring town called Pinki (pronounced "pintchy," I think).  It was another "youth" choir -- young adults aged 18-30 -- and they were awesome.  The music they were singing was mostly new music that had been written by Latvian composers.  There are more Latvian composers writing choral music right now than any other kind of music.  Because it was new, it included some very unusual harmonies and some unusual techniques.  The director was a fairly young guy, also, but he really knew his stuff.  I wanted to talk to some of the singers and see how their music education in the schools helped prepare them to be in this type of an ensemble, but we had to leave early in order to catch the bus back to Riga.  I was supposed to attend another concert/rehearsal last evening but spent the time getting X-rayed instead.

We had a relatively quiet day today with my sore foot.  It's still a bit swollen and will probably turn black and blue, but at least I can walk on it now without too much pain.  We did go to the grocery and pick up a few items.  Their grocery stores are probably 1/2 full of liquor, candy, and cookies.  The other 50% is regular food.  Rather strange, to say the least.  The only items we purchase are drinks (Coke, Coke Zero, and water) and items for breakfast.  We haven't eaten very many breakfasts out at all.  Don enjoys fixing his own breakfast -- eggs, some type of breakfast meat, and toast -- and I generally have a bowl of cereal or some toast.   Several of the restaurants serve breakfast, but they don't open until 9 or 10:00.

No pictures today.  They load so slowly that I get impatient. (Me? Impatient? You're kidding!)  I'm going to have to try and figure out a way to get them to load quicker.

Have a wonderful day, and we'll post more later!
